Hazeltine-Olekshuk Grocery
Most of the information taken from History of Ashtabula County, Ohio history book.
When Daniel Hazeltine moved to Monroe Center in 1920, he o pened a gas station and pop stand in front of
his home. In 1928, he operated the store on the corner of Center and Monroe-Kelloggsville Rd. that is known now as Bennett's
Grocery
(since closed).
One year later he went into partnership with M.M. Simons until building a store on his property in 1931.
The store which was attached to his house, began a delivery service when Frank Morse asked if he could deliver bread to people.
Eventually the Hazeltine children began delivering groceries in a 1931 panel truck. Buss, and later Lucille and Georgia,
would take the orders for the next delivery when the groceries were brought to the home. With the gas storage of the
war years, this service was discontinued. Dan retired in 1948, selling his business to his son-in-law and daughter,
Paul and Lucille Olekshuk.
Lucille, loved by all, and was known for giving a piece of candy to every child that came into the store.
Paul and Lucille retired in 1983.
